Some Testimonials

J is a young man with cerebral palsy who uses a variety of strategies to control secondary complications commonly associated with his condition. He uses the supported electric standing frame to stand for prolonged periods and he spends time lying prone to control his spasms and maintain muscle length, critical for his function.

Using the Soundbeam equipment while standing to compose music is a useful adjunct to motivate J to get the therapeutic benefits from a prolonged stand and it also helps promote controlled activity of his upper limbs. Standing also has the additional psychological benefit for J by allowing him to interact with others at eye level.

His father wrote to Chaseley expressing his delight at his son’s treatment, “To know there is someone ‘out there’ who understands J’s extensive physical problems is a great relief and joy to myself and his family. On my visit to Chaseley I was quite overcome by the sight of J standing, using his upper limbs to conduct music! All with a wonderful smile that I shall never forget. It literally brought tears to my eyes.”

M, who sustained an incomplete C4 spinal cord injury more than 20 years ago, is another young man who benefits immensely from being able to stand regularly and attends Chaseley for day care and outpatient therapy treatment.

M commented, “I noticed that since I started to stand twice weekly I am less bloated and generally felt lighter. My bowel regime is more regular and I have noticed that my urine output is higher which can’t be a bad thing. On the whole, when I stand more, I spasm less. Standing gives me a good stretch on my Achilles and this keeps my feet in a better position in the chair. It’s hard to explain but when I can stand regularly my general sense of well being is improved.”

S has a progressive neurological condition and has therapeutic muscle stimulation regularly to her hands and has noticed significant benefit. She comments “The muscle stimulator loosens my hands and it then makes it easier for me to do things like use my TV remote and text my family on my mobile”.

J, who attends Chaseley for day care said, "It gives me a social life, and male company, which I really missed. A group of us regularly meet up every Friday for a beer in the bar, and a good chat. There is a fantastic art room here, and I spend many an hour painting. Now I’ve been coming for a couple of years, and I love talking to all the other day care people and residents including some of the people who are brain damaged, because although they can’t talk to me, I get such a kick out of making eye contact and knowing that they appreciate me taking the time. I’ve made friends with some of the residents, and get invited to their rooms for a chat. Without Chaseley, I wouldn’t have a social life at all and as my wife would tell you, would be a miserable so and so."

The father of a former serviceman, who suffered a severe brain injury commented, “D’s condition and quality of life has improved immensely, whereby he now clearly recognises members of staff, family and friends, and at the same time appreciates a joke with a broad smile.”

B, who has Motor Neurone Disease and attends Chaseley as an outpatient for therapy, finds he has a more intensive workout on the cycle when using our virtual reality system and this has immense benefits for his fitness levels and general health.
