Chaseley's Therapy
Services
Chaseley’s Therapy Service
provides specialist care for adults with severe and complex
physical disability, including those with brain injury, spinal
injury and progressive neurological conditions such as Multiple
Sclerosis. The team of qualified physiotherapists and
occupational therapists and a speech and language therapist work
alongside experienced therapy assistants to provide holistic care
for the individual, from slow stream rehabilitation prior to
further placement, to on-going maintenance and management of
deterioration, and end of life care. The service regularly
has therapy students on placement, working with both residents and
outpatients.
Residential and respite/holiday
care residents can access the therapy services that include
Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech & Language
Therapy. A growing
out-patient service is provided for those living in
the community with long term neurological conditions that require
on-going physiotherapy management of their condition.
The therapy team members are
expert in the management of physical disability and the
complications that are commonly associated with physical
disability. Specialised therapy interventions at Chaseley
include complex postural and seating
assessment, customised splinting, powered wheelchair
assessments, electrical stimulation
(F.E.S.), cognitive and visual screening
assessment and
environmental control liaison, with access to a fully equipped
gym area and therapy kitchen.
Encouraging motivation and
long-term participation in all therapy programmes is supported by
sound beam therapy, use of a virtual reality computer system and
the introduction of Nintendo Wii Fit into therapy programmes.
Promoting optimal level of
functioning is the primary aim when working with people who have
complex neurodisabilities and it is important to consider the
individuals focused goals when planning intervention. This
may range from a physical function such as standing to completing a
transfer, or walking, to the ability to move a finger to access an
environmental control
system by pressing a
switch, which can operate a range of equipment such as a
television, light or nurse call system.
